What x402 is

x402 is a pattern for paying for web resources programmatically, built on the long-reserved HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code. Instead of a human reaching for a card, a server can respond that payment is required, and the client — here, an AI agent — can pay and retry the request automatically. It turns payment into a native step of an HTTP exchange.

Pay-per-request for agents

For autonomous agents, x402 enables pay-per-request access to APIs, data, and services without pre-negotiated accounts or stored cards.
